Talisman

Today I was walking through the door of my bedroom when my talisman fell on my head. It's the little things that always remind you of the bigger things. When I was 17, I was hit by a car and my Cherokee flipped over. I was not wearing my seat belt and was thrown onto the headliner of my car as it rolled, which ended up being a good thing because the car crushed from the seat back to the dashboard and I was completely unscathed. As I waited on the curb for the insurance man, my parents and the ambulance to arrive... in that order, I tried to figure out how I was going to flip my car back over and drive home. I stood up and began picking up school books, an empty champagne bottle from the previous weekend and a tiny metal piece of my car that was scratched (or rather grinded) on one side but otherwise mostly still shiny. A woman came out of her house and took the books from my hands, setting them on the curb. She told me I could go use her phone and call my family. I kept the piece of metal in my hand and it has been precariously placed at the top of every bedroom door since that day, except for when I lent it to a friend, for a few months, who needed it more than I did. It was the one thing that reminded me of how quickly things can change in your life and how lucky I was to be sitting there thinking so.

So today it fell on my head and it was not but a few hours later that my cousin called and told me Unkie Jim died this morning. My talisman is now back over my door and my thoughts are with the Johnsons tonight and Unkie Jim where ever he may be...........
